Kate McKenzie
I have a background in nursing, where I specialised in cancer care. Though I was able to begin integrating some rudimentary skills in complementary therapies whilst working in a hospice, it was far more difficult in acute settings. In 2000 I joined Penny Brohn Cancer Care (formerly Bristol Cancer Help Centre) and was able to work in a truly integrative way. This inspired me to develop my skills and interest in complementary therapies which led to me studying massage at the Bristol College of Massage and Bodywork (BCMB) and reflexology with the International Institute of Reflexology. I was also able to develop my skills in the self-help techniques of meditation, relaxation, imagery and breath work and how to use a truly holistic approach to enhance health and well being.
I continue to work at part-time at Penny Brohn Cancer Care (PBCC) as a Nurse Therapist, providing advice and support to participants on our residential courses and as a Massage Therapist, running a clinic once a week. I also lead courses both for people with a cancer diagnosis in developing and using self-help techniques and for healthcare professionals and complementary therapists in how they can use this approach with their clients. I also facilitate a course for massage therapists to look at the knowledge and skills needed to work with people with cancer.
Aside from my work at PBCC and my private massage practice, as co-founder of Health Designs, I am a strong advocate for well being, in all its forms and promote this both to individuals and the work environment.

I continue to be impressed, and hugely relaxed, by the way that Kate adapts her massage to suit my physical needs on any given day. She always seems to get right to the heart of the problem and tackles it in a wonderfully sensitive and beneficial way. I couldn't do without her!..

“Each time I see Kate I come out feeling more in touch with my body, less in my head and absolutely relaxed. I would recommend her to anyone who needs relief from any temporary or ongoing pain, or if they just need to give themselves a little love! I had Repetitive Strain Injury when I first came to see Kate and she has helped to reduce the pain to the point where I am now starting to think it may have gone away, which is fantastic! It also gives me an hour that is solely mine to enjoy – priceless.”
